Crusher

Drew finally got a nickname! He's been dying to have one. In the past, Kyle has called him "The Baby," which as I'm sure you can imagine, Drew wasn't very fond of. I suggested we up him to "The Boy," since afterall, he's a full grown kid and has been for quite some time. It sticks most of the time, but habits are hard to break. Earlier this summer, Drew suggested "cookie-head," reminding me of Seinfield and how giving yourself a nickname is a bad idea. Besides, since cookie-head has nothing to do with anything other than a desire to have a nickname, we never call him cookie-head. However, on occasion, I have been known to call him "knuckle-head" (pronounce the "k").

Enter coach Joe. He's made football a lot of fun this year. He has hand signals for all the plays and has given nicknames to each kid on the team: jack knife, wreaking ball, dozer, smooth, mad dog, etc. There's a name for the entire d-line too, but I can't remember it. He also let the kids vote on what decals to put on their helmets and whether or not they wanted their nicknames on their jerseys. Such a big difference compared to the Westlake coaches. Anyway, the kids wanted nicknames instead of last names on the back of their jerseys ... some not-so-fun parents protested. Joe compromised: last names on the back, nicknames on the front (for an extra $4 -- how can you go wrong?!). I'll be sure to post a pic of "Crusher" after his real first game of the season (this weekend).

Erik has the best nickname story. There was a guy on ship who wanted a nickname so [foolishily] asked for one. Another guy said "Fine, you want a nickname, it's 'Nancy'. And when you're wearing those glasses it's 'Fancy Nancy'!". That always cracked me up.

It works the same in our running group. Everyone gets a nickname, but you have to "earn" it. If you ask for one you're going to get the lamest/grossest nickname the group can think of.
