I heard from the allergist this morning. I'm really impressed. The doctor himself called and spoke with me for a good 20mins or more and broke things down such that even a non-scientist could have understood what he was talking about. As we suspected (beyond a shadow of doubt in my mind) Mallory is indeed allergic to peanuts. Her IgE response for peanut protein came back at 1.8 - which would apparently be a positive result with a relatively low number if she were 7, but she's just 12mo. So, relative to her age it was kind of high? At any rate, at her 24 or 36 months well check we'll repeat the blood test and get a comparison IgE level. That result will determine whether a peanut challenge is necessary or not. Either way, the doctor feels it's unlikely that Mallory will outgrow the allergy. Though as it turns out Mallory has had a chewy granola bar with peanut flour included in the ingredient list (second to last). So it seems that processed or potentially cooked peanuts in small amount don't cause a reaction - at least one we can see. The good news here is that while we'll be banning raw peanuts and all peanut products from our house, we might not have to worry about foods that are packaged on the same equipment as those that contain peanuts etc. etc.
